Rita Markwell (also known as the Hush Gypsy) performs contemporary dance, bellydance, American Tribal Style (r) Bellydance, Modern Gypsy and contact improvisation.
A free spirit, Rita is a diverse, talented, passionate and emotive dancer. She can make you laugh hysterically with her comedic presence. She can make you cry with her personal tales through dance. She thrashes her skirt in a carefree yet powerful vortex of spins like no other.
In the past few years she has directed Silk Road Rebellion, a Brisbane based ATS(r) troupe that has performed at the National Folk Festival and Woodford Folk Festival in different collaborations. She has also become more involved in the contemporary dance scene, offering successful workshops in contact improvisation and completing two long intensives with Expressions Dance Company (contemporary dance) in 2015-16. As a Gypsy dancer she has performed with numerous musicians, including a 10 piece Macedonian-Romani band in early 2016.
Her greatest love is improvisation, but she is also an avid writer on choreography and composition, as well on different aspects of dancer development. Rita also has a background in remedial massage therapy and an interest in the human form. Part technique nerd, part rebellious spirit, she aims to enthral and expand participants in every workshop experience she offers.
