This workshop will be an exploration into aspects that influence Lakita’s unique style of modern Bellydance. Passionately blending technique and stylisations from both Cabaret and Fusion genres and then adding a big dose of urban street dance culture is Lakita’s latest inspiration. The approach, music, attitude and aesthetic is a response to her surroundings and an invitation into feeling your hips and heart move to a different beat!
Lakita started training in Classical Ballet at the age of 3, the beginning of an everlasting obsession with movement and music. At age 17 Lakita entered a deep and intensive journey into Contemporary Dance and Ballet studies in a full-time program at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Her early 20’s took her into a new exploration of art forms from across the globe and she delved into theatre and acting. During her first Belly Dance class in 2009 Lakita knew she had found her heart and soul and it wasn’t long till she was charmed by Fusion Belly Dance and life was surrendered to living and breathing this study. Lakita has been travelling regularly to train with the masters and participating in both Rachel Brice’s 8 Elements program and more recently Dancecraft by Zoe Jakes.
Lakita fuses her Bellydance training with her past, leading her through an ever-developingnew contemporary interpretation of this art form. Over the last few years Lakita has been based in Byron Bay establishing her own school, ‘Lakita’s Lounge- School of Contemporary Bellydance’, and is now currently expanding into Melbourne and focusing on stage. Lakita has been a guest performer at many unique events and festivals sharing the stage with acts such as Filastine, Temple Step Project, Dakini, Kayla Scintilla, Ganga Giri, OKA and most recently her career highlight – Beats Antique!
